An International Look at the Denver Debate

An International Look at the Denver Debate Photo from Facebook.com by University of Denver Some time passed and my flatmates came back. Not much had happened excitement-wise on my screen, so I lowered the volume and invited them to come in and talk while I watched. Of course, in the U.S., we always say that its rude to discuss religion and politics in social settings, but what Ive found here is that within minutes of finding out that youre American, the English want to know your opinion on the election. Its best to have your answer prepared to be discussed at length. Two of my British flatmates and two of my American flatmates sat with me that night and what I noticed most was that not only did the Brits know far more about the election and the politics of America, but they  cared more. They nearly fell out of their chairs, mouths agape, when one of the Americans told us that she didnt plan on voting in this election because she simply didnt really have any sort of opinion on who won. From there, we began a debate of our own on why or why not one should vote in an election. While a few jokes were tossed around about escaping Britain for freedom, the main point of discussion came down to the fact that though we have the right to vote, there seems to be no good candidate to vote for. In England, Obama is seen as an extremely smooth and cool president, and thanks to Romneys gaffe during the London Olympics, hes not at all well-received here. However, it seems to me that because Englands own politics are a bit in shambles right now, they see the American struggles as merely a bump in the road; in short, they think Obama is doing well enough.  In that way, theyre right. He is doing well enough, but not great, and thats the problem that most Americans have with him. I will be honest and tell you that I chose to have this discussion over watching the end of the debate. I felt that it was more important to get the global perspective on things rather than watch two grown men have a pissing match, repeating their meagre platforms that will probably never become more than that. I have heard that Romney won this debate, that Obama seemed careless and unprepared, but it all means nothing because unless they create truly moving points to sway the opinions of voters, rather than focusing on bashing one another. No one will care unless they give them a reason to, except maybe the Brits, but remember, they cant vote.

Improve Your Kids Writing Skills This Summer - TutorNerds

Improve Your Kids Writing Skills This Summer - TutorNerds Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: Five ways kids can improve their writing skills this summer Summer is in full swing and kids are enjoying some time outside of the classroom. English and writing are probably two of the farthest things from their mind, but kids can benefit from improving their core subjects over the summer. Writing is one of the essential skills that kids will use throughout their education as well as in any career field they might choose. Written communication helps students express themselves creatively, get a clear point across to a classmate or teacher, and persuade the reader to agree with their point of view. Whether a young learner needs to catch up to grade level or wants to excel beyond their current capabilities, there are some great ways students can improve their writing skills over the summer our in-home Irvine English tutors are here to improve your kids writing skills this summer. 1. Create a publication Creative students enjoy creating their very own publication based on their current interests and curiosities. Perhaps theyre going to write a magazine about monster trucks or a book about every species of bird living in their home state. It doesnt matter what kids write about but simply that they write. Kids can write a first and second draft, create pictures to go with their writing, ask parents or friends to read their publication, and increased their love of learning. When students write for fun, theyre more likely to enjoy the practical applications of the written word and want to pursue this intellectual task in the future. 2.   Write summaries Most students have a reading list for the summer. One great way for students to get in a bit of writing practice is to write a summary after each chapter. They can discuss any growth or conflict the main characters had in that chapter, talk about important plot points, and ask questions about things they didnt quite grasp. Its important for students to go beyond the basic summary so they can expand their knowledge and make predictions about what will happen in the rest of the book. 3.   Work with a one-on-one tutor Another great way for kids to increase their writing skills over the summer is to work with a one-on-one tutor. Many students excel in certain areas of writing but need some help with the basic mechanics. Lacking these skills can hold students back from communicating to their full ability and enjoying writing in general. When kids work with a one-on-one tutor in their home, they can focus only on what they need to improve and advance their skills quickly, moving on to other summer activities (READ: 5 Reasons to Hire a Los Angeles Summer Tutor). 4.   Expand vocabulary A sure fire way to improve general writing skills is to expand a student’s vocabulary. Countless students will write reports or assignments using the same word over and over again. This becomes distracting to the reader and also stops the writer from producing effective communication. When students have a broad vocabulary they can be descriptive using varied language, keep the reader interested and start to attach emotional meaning to different words that are most appropriate for specific situations. 5.   Read for fun Students who read tend to be better writers because the two subjects are directly connected. During the school year, students have myriad mandatory assignments, but the summer offers a unique opportunity for students to read about topics they love. Reading for fun increases the student’s ability to comprehend language as well as use it to express ideas. As long as students are reading books or articles at their current level, they should have a chance to choose what they want to read about. Its not important if they read about something specific but simply that their reading skills improve consistently and that they continue to love reading rather than viewing it as a chore. Summer is the perfect time of the year for your kids to improve their writing skills. Call us today and we will match you with an experienced Irvine English tutor from TutorNerds. ?? Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child

?? Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child Why you Should Hire an SEN Tutor for your Child Kids with Special Educational Needs (SEN) often struggle with mainstream teaching. These needs include conditions like dyslexia, dyspraxia, and autism. The nature of these conditions means kids often require specialist help that most school teachers are unable to provide. Add to that the fact that class sizes are increasing while resources are decreasing, and it’s no wonder your child is struggling. For that reason, an increasing number of parents are hiring private SEN tutors to help their child. Here are some reasons why you should hire an SEN tutor.1) Your Child is the PriorityEven if your child has special requirements, it’s hard for teachers to give them the attention they require. After all, they still need to be on hand to help the rest of the class. This can often make your child feel more isolated, and they will end up falling further behind with their studies. A private SEN tutor, however, puts your child first. For the entirety of each session, they’re only focused on h elping your child. This means they can help your child with any issues they face, and your child knows that they don’t have to compete for attention.2) They’re an ExpertThe average teacher may be aware of SEN, and know some of the basic ways in which they can help your child. They won’t, however, be experts. This means they can’t always support your child to the extent they need.SEN tutors have a complete understanding of your child’s issues, and so they can offer the best possible support. They’ll know all of the latest techniques to aid your child as effectively as possible, and can help them with any issues they’re facing.3) It’s More ComfortableFor some kids with SEN, school can be a daunting place. They can often feel ignored, and may even be experiencing bullying or teasing.Their lack of confidence or understanding of social relationships can make school a very uncomfortable place to be.Private SEN tutoring takes place in the comfort of your child’s home. They†™ll feel more relaxed, and so more open to receiving the help that their tutor can provide.By providing a “safe space” for your child to develop, your child’s tutor can get to the heart of the issue far quicker than their teacher.4) Your Child’s Confidence will ImproveConfidence is a big issue for kids with SEN. They often compare themselves to their classmates, and don’t always understand why they can’t keep up.This lack of confidence starts a vicious cycle, where they become even more withdrawn, lose more confidence, and then withdraw themselves further. When you hire an SEN tutor, part of their job is to instil confidence in your child. They do this by taking the time to listen to them, and supporting them with their schoolwork. As your child’s school work improves, and their self-esteem increases, so too will their confidence. They’ll start participating more in lessons, and engaging more with classmates.5) Learning will Become FunLearning should be fun. For some kids with SEN, however, learning becomes a chore, or even the stuff of nightmares.Your child might end up hating school, and as a result they’ll also hate learning. This can have a really negative impact on their development, and also their future life.An SEN tutor can make learning fun again. They aren’t confined by the syllabus or the formal classroom setting. They can use different techniques, more suited to your child’s condition, to make subjects come to life.Once your child realises learning can be fun, their whole attitude will shift. Chances are they’ll start enjoying their time at school, and their grades will improve as a result.Find an SEN TutorIf you have a child with special educational needs, it can be hard to know what to do next. The issues your child faces can feel overwhelming. An SEN tutor won’t only help your child overcome those issues, but they’ll help you cope too.If you’re concerned about the added expense, take a look at how much an SEN tutor is likely to cost. You might be pleasantly surprised.Fill in the form below for some personalised quotes. We’ll match you with the best 3 tutors for your child!

Enriching Your World With Saturated Chemistry

Enriching Your World With Saturated ChemistryBeing taught to think in saturated chemistry requires you to learn about what that term actually means. In a more simple sense, it refers to the most used aspects of chemical and physical science. Every living thing is made up of atoms, which are connected to each other by chemical bonds. If you think about the building blocks of everything you have in your home, like your clothes, furniture, walls, and of course, the people you love, then you will get a clear picture of what this term actually means. The idea of the state is that a substance has a chemical or physical affinity to another substance, or the reverse. We call them 'Saturated' when there is a greater affinity to the other substance than the original.Saturated chemistry is the study of interactions between different substances that are closely related by chemical bonds. Everything in the world that we can see or touch was once in the form of molecules or even solids. Sometimes, these mixtures are no longer considered solid but liquid. That is why the term 'solid' is commonly used when discussing the mixture between two liquids. What makes these methods of chemistry so important is that they serve as a great way to determine the properties of a substance, and how they interact with one another. This information is so valuable to the production of commercial products and industrial processes. For example, if a chemical makes the oil tank lubricant flow better than the old material, it can be predicted by the science of saturation chemistry.Since this method is such a broad topic, there are many uses of the science in different purposes. If you think about it, the science of saturation can be useful in numerous ways, like these: the treatment of plants, soil, animals, and people, as well as various industrial processes. It can also be used in medicine, as well as the farming industry. When thinking about it, the science of saturation could potentially help peop le with their daily lives. Saturated chemistry is now applied in so many ways, from the production of fuel to the cultivation of plants. When the processes in our environment are monitored for any changes, the time will come when we will see changes too.The science of saturation has seen a lot of development over the years and is still going strong as a scientific field. However, it is crucial to note that these are just some of the things saturated chemistry can teach us.

What is a Growth Mindset

What is a Growth Mindset All You Need to Know about Growth Mindset Theory. ChaptersWhat Do We Mean by Mindset? The Difference Between a Growth Mindset and a Fixed Mindset? The Evidence and the Appeal. You may well have heard about growth mindset, the hugely influential new psychological theory from Carol Dweck. As an idea, Its influence can be seen pretty much everywhere â€" in the school system, in business, even in politics. If you haven’t heard about this already, then maybe it’s high time that you pay attention. This theory developed by Dweck, a professor of social psychology and developmental psychology at Stanford University, proposes that there are two categories of mindset into which the vast majority of the population can be grouped. These two categories relate to the ways in which people understand the origin of their ability. Those people with a ‘fixed mindset’ believe â€" whether consciously or not â€" that their ability is innate; that they were born with it. Meanwhile, those with a ‘growth mindset’ believe â€" again, maybe not consciousl y â€" that their abilities come from their having acquired them, and their being able to acquire more. This, quite simply, is the long and short of it. Yet, the appeal of such an idea comes from the fact that the growth mindset, as proposed by Dweck, is more likely to make you successful, less stressed, and more able to adapt to failure and new challenges.Think about it: success comes simply with a change of mindset. It’s this that explains why everyone is talking about it. And this is why you need to know about this idea.Find out more in our introduction to growth mindset! Learn to love learning with your growth mindset!Meanwhile, the growth mindset rather looks at intelligence and says, ‘intelligence can be developed; talents and abilities can keep growing â€" and I can acquire new ones’.These two mindsets define a continuum â€" a continuum on which we all sit. So, whilst we may have elements of a growth mindset in some fields â€" like, ‘if I practise my guitar I will get better’ â€" there are some fields which a fixed mindset is present for pretty much all of us: very rarely will someone believe that, if they try hard enough, they will be able to fly. However, some of us have more of a growth mindset, or of a fixed mindset, than others. The Effect of the Different Mindsets. However, whilst this all sounds super simple, the ramifications of this basic attitude to the source of intelligence are plentiful. Because whilst one leads us to believe that we can change ourselves, the other suggests that there is no real hope of that at all.The Fixed Mind set. From the fixed mindset comes the general desire to look clever at all costs â€" and to defend the ability that is already enjoyed and that is innate. As a result, people with a fixed mind set, according to Dweck, have a mental attitude that shirks from challenges and gives up easily when struggling. This mindset leads people to believe that effort is fairly useless â€" because intelligence is unchangeable â€" whilst criticism, however helpful, tends to go ignored.People with a fixed mindset tend to have an inclination towards a fear of other people’s achievement and success â€" as the success of others challenges the very notion of their own innate intelligence. All of this leads to a generally deterministic view of the world in which nothing can change and in which the lot that you are dealt is the situation with which you have to deal.Find out how to develop your growth mindset! The growth mindset can start in the classroom. The Growth Mindset. In comparison to this, the growth mindset is the inverse. People with a growth mindset, rather than a desire to demonstrate their intelligence, have a desire to learn. And this changes everything.People with a growth mindset face challenges happily as a step in the process of learning. Every setback produces greater persistence, a desire to persevere, whilst they are happy to take risks and to develop new strategies to overcome problems.Effort takes on a new importance in the growth mindset. As intelligence is something than can be endlessly developed, effort is the key to its growth. If you keep going, you can get there.Meanwhile, criticism and advice are accepted gratefully â€" and it is learned from â€" whilst the success of others is a continued source of inspiration. As a result, people with a growth mindset are thought to have a greater sense of free will. They have an attitude in which they can achieve what they w ant to achieve â€" constantly pursuing learning and growth and acquiring new skills. It is not hard to see which one Dweck might prefer…The Evidence and the Appeal.Over the last century, many people have argued along similar lines as Dweck. From philosophers like John Dewey, who argued that the self and its intelligence are in a continuous process of development to contemporary scientists and theorists who argue for the brain’s neuroplasticity. In all of this, the brain appears as something like a muscle, that is endlessly being strengthened. All of these people’s ideas give something of a defence to Dweck’s very popular theory of the mind. Yet, her ideas came out of the context of education. Her theories, for example, are based on a study that she conducted in which two groups of children sat a test. Following the test, in which all of the children were told they did well, the children were given praise. However, this praise differed between the two groups. One group were prais ed for being intelligent, whilst the other were praised for the effort they put in.They then continued to monitor the kids and their future test scores. The result was that those who were praised for their intelligence did not perform as well later as those who were praised for their effort.Praising effort, then, became the concern of many educators â€" and the growth mindset was born.Find growth mindset resources! You are never to young to develop a growth mindset. The Appeals of the Growth Mindset â€" and Criticism. It is true that mindset theory is one of the most influential theories of intelligence out there these days, having been used to frame, in business, what has been called an ‘entrepreneurial mindset’, and having been used to inform the way that praise is given and academic achievement considered in the education system. However, the rhetorical â€" and in some sense, ideological â€" elements of the theory might give it a greater appeal than it might otherwise have had.Part of its appeal comes down to the fact that it is, at root, very simple. It proposes a dichotomy of attitudes that are easily comprehensible â€" and it gives a quick fix image of success: to be successful, all you need to do is to develop a mindset of growth.Meanwhile, the growth mindset â€" emphasising effort and the idea that we can all achieve â€" is the scientific legitimation of a meritocracy, in which the suc cessful deserve their success and the unsuccessful deserve their unsuccess too. The world perhaps likes this theory so much because it tells them what they want to hear.

Solve Calculus Problems

Solve Calculus Problems Calculus is one of the most useful and important branch of Mathematics. Calculus is the study of functions and its different characteristics. Calculus has its own set of different formulas and methods used to solve various questions Calculus is applied to find the lengths, areas, volumes, graphs etc. of 2-D and 3-D shapes by using techniques of Differentiation and Integration. Calculus consists of two sub-branches which are called as Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. Example 1: Find the derivative of the function, f(x) = 5x3 + 2x2. Solution: To find the derivative, the Power rule of the Derivatives says that: d(xn)/dx = n * xn-1 First step: We can distribute the derivative to both the terms: This gives; d (5x3 + 2x2)/ dx = [ d(5x3)/ dx ] + [ d(2x2)/ dx ] Using the above formula, we get: (5 *3 * x3-1) + (2 * 2 * x2-1) = (15 * x3-1) + (4 * x2-1) = (15 * x2) + (4 * x1) = (15 x2) + (4x) Hence the derivative of f(x) is f(x) = 15 x2 + 4x. Example 2: Find the anti-derivative of the function f(x) = 20 - x? Solution: Here the given function is f(x) = 20 - x. Power rule states anti-derivative of xn is equal to xn+1/(n+1). The anti-derivative of x is 1/2 x2. Using the power rule the anti-derivative of 20 needs to be found. 20 can be written as 20x0. Therefore, the anti-derivative of 20 x0 is 20x1. Hence anti derivative F(x) = 20 x -1/2 x2.
